Multi-parameter Auctions with Online Supply
نویسندگان
چکیده
We study a basic auction design problem with online supply. There are two unit-demand bidders and two types of items. The first item type will arrive first for sure, and the second item type may or may not arrive. The auctioneer has to decide the allocation of an item immediately after each item arrives, but is allowed to compute payments after knowing how many items arrived. For this problem we show that there is no deterministic truthful and individually rational mechanism that, even with unbounded computational resources, gets any finite approximation factor to the optimal social welfare. The basic multi-parameter online supply model that we study opens the space for several interesting questions about the power of randomness. There are three prominent sources of randomness. • Randomized mechanisms • Stochastic arrival • Bayesian setting (values drawn from a distribution) For each of these sources of randomness, without using the other sources of randomness, what is the optimal approximation factor one can get? The currently known best approximation factors to optimal social welfare for none of these settings is better than max{n,m} where n is the number of bidders and m is the number of items. ∗Part of the work was done when the author was at Microsoft Research. ar X iv :1 51 1. 03 69 9v 1 [ cs .G T ] 1 1 N ov 2 01 5

Clinching Auctions with Online Supply
Auctions for perishable goods such as internet ad inventory need to make real-time allocationand pricing decisions as the supply of the good arrives in an online manner, without knowing theentire supply in advance. These allocation and pricing decisions get complicated when buyershave some global constraints. In this work, we consider a multi-unit model where buyers haveglob...
متن کاملAn assessment of supply chain managers' trust in online auctions
Purpose – The purpose of this study is to empirically test the levels of trust supply chain managers exhibit regarding online auctions. The study seeks to test the hypotheses that supply chain managers with higher levels of trust in online auctions would exhibit more familiarity with online auctions, more positive relationships with suppliers, stronger focus on cost management, a stronger focus...

متن کاملA Comparative Study of Multi-Attribute Continuous Double Auction Mechanisms
Auctions have been as a competitive method of buying and selling valuable or rare items for a long time. Single-sided auctions in which participants negotiate on a single attribute (e.g. price) are very popular. Double auctions and negotiation on multiple attributes create more advantages compared to single-sided and single-attribute auctions. Nonetheless, this adds the complexity of the auctio...

متن کاملLearning the demand curve in posted-price digital goods auctions
Online digital goods auctions are settings where a seller with an unlimited supply of goods (e.g. music or movie downloads) interacts with a stream of potential buyers. In the posted price setting, the seller makes a take-it-or-leave-it offer to each arriving buyer. We study the seller’s revenue maximization problem in posted-price auctions of digital goods. We find that algorithms from the mul...
